Record-breaking Turnout for 160th Edition of the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta
Scuttlebutt Sailing News: "A Who’s Who of sailors has hit the shores of Newport, R.I., in preparation for this weekend’s 160th edition of the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta presented by Rolex. One sixty is a lot of years—in fact, it’s the most that any regatta in this country can claim—and the event’s reputation is rock-solid as a “must-do,” especially during even-numbered years when it directly precedes the Newport Bermuda Race. It’s not surprising, then, that a record-breaking 189 boats, 25 percent more than last year, are planning to participate in a full slate of buoy racing on Saturday and Sunday (July 14-15), and many will take on the challenges of a separately scored Around the (Conanicut) Island Race on Friday (July 13), as well."
Cautiously Optimistic on MarineTraffic Internet AIS | Sail Magazine: "... One particularly good source of free Internet AIS is MarineTraffic (MT), which seems to have attracted a large number of volunteer listening stations and recently added a slew of new features along with a completely redesigned web interface.... in many other places around the U.S. coast, there’s no Internet AIS coverage at all. If you have a spot and a few hundred dollars to invest, please consider becoming a MarineTraffic volunteer. In the interest of free-market competitiveness, I think we volunteers should also hedge our bets and contribute our feeds to other sites like AISHub,ShipFinder, and FleetMon as well, so MarineTraffic doesn’t end up cornering the market."
Fire tears through historic Eastern Yacht Club | Local News - WCVB Home: "....While the fire itself was contained to the attic and a couple of rooms on the third floor, Porter said that the building sustained extensive water damage from the building's sprinkler system, as the gushing water brought down ceilings. Porter explained that the water damage was so pervasive that the only dry place firefighters could find to begin salvage operations was a covered deck on the club's back porch. The clubhouse, which dates back to 1881, contains "so much history," including paintings and model boats, Porter noted. He could not immediately offer an assessment of the damage to those artifacts. While investigators remained on scene Friday morning, most of the firefighters cleared the scene around 5 a.m...."
