Sperry Top-Sider NOOD in Chicago: Local Knowledge | Sailing World: "One thing that’s true about racing in Chicago is that it’s very challenging. The weather can throw a lot of curve balls, and this year, with the lake water temperatures being extremely low because of the deep and prolonged winter, another element to add to the mix is wind shear. Expect it. We essentially get wind shear when the cold water creates a boundary layer of cool air. The warmer air at higher altitudes is trying to displace the cool air at the water level, and the sails will really show a discrepancy in wind strength and angle. On port tack, for example, you’ll be sailing along with the Windex pointing practically head to wind, and the top of the sails are permanently luffing. On starboard it all looks normal. Trimmers will be pulling their hair out trying to adjust to it. Wind shear is generally a precursor to the new wind that’s coming. It’ll be right shifted at the top of the rig, and eventually that warmer air comes down and replaces the cool air...."
America's Cup rules allow Oracle to sail with challengers | www.ktvu.com: "... Defending champion Oracle Team USA will race against challengers in early elimination rounds. It can build two 62-foot, wing-sailed foiling catamarans — insurance against a catastrophic failure — while challengers will be limited to one, a clause that's sure to be controversial. In another twist, either Oracle Team USA or a challenger could start the best-of-13 America's Cup match with a one-point lead, depending on results from the qualifying rounds...."
Man rescued from Monterey sailboat in high seas | Monterey News - KSBW Home: "....A Coast Guard crew found the sailboat, and the aircrew lowered a rescue swimmer from a helicopter onto the boat. The swimmer determined the sailor's condition had deteriorated and he needed emergency help. Due to high seas and strong winds, hoisting directly from the boat was impossible. The rescue swimmer took the sailor into the water to safely hoist to the helicopter. The man was taken to Monterey Regional Airport and transferred to awaiting emergency medical services who reported him in stable condition. The one remaining person aboard the sailing vessel was unable to safely operate it by himself and was towed back to Monterey by a Coast Guard motor lifeboat crew."
