Race to Mackinac ready to set sail - Chicago Sun-Times: "Peter Thornton’s aim at Chicago sailing history fits perfectly with the squirrelly roots of the Royono Trophy. Thornton bought il mostro (Italian for ‘‘the monster’’) with the intention of bringing the trophy back to the Chicago Yacht Club. The Royono Trophy goes to the first to finish in the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac. The 104th Mac begins Friday with the cruisers division. The bulk of the fleet sets sail Saturday. Thornton thinks il mostro, a Goetz Custom Boats Volvo 70, can not only be first to finish but possibly do it with a course record. ‘‘That was the whole reason,’’ said Thornton, 72, who made his mark in business as a lighting innovator."
