Vendée Globe turns demolition derby as fifth starter retires The Independent
"The demolition derby aspect of the Vendée Globe round the world race continued to dominate coverage on Sunday as the fifth of the 20 starters limped off the racecourse and a sixth sought to fix a problem which could also force him to retire. The 24,400-mile race is only a week old as Jérémie Beyou heads for the Cape Verde Islands to fix what sounds like a major hydraulics problem controlling the keel of his Open 60 Maitre Coq. It will not be easy, his boat is also taking water, and the race rules forbid any outside assistance. At the same time Poland’s Zbigniew Gutkowski was seeking shelter to free a sail wrapped around the top of the mast of Energa. . . ."
NOR Published for ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami: "US Sailing’s premier competition for Olympic and Paralympic class sailboat racing returns to Miami, Fla. January 27 – February 2, 2013. Now known as the ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, the regatta serves up six days of elite-level competition in the 13 sailing events selected for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Event organizers have posted the Notice of Race on the event website. Online registration is open for competitors and coaches, and ends on January 7, 2013."
Bay Waveland wins Lipton Regatta | Outdoors | The Sun Herald: "Bay Waveland Yacht Club rallied from a one-point deficit Sunday to win the 92nd annual Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge Cup at Pass Christian Yacht Club. "It feels fantastic," skipper Zak Fanberg said of the win. He skippered the final race with his crew of Randy Santa Cruz. "It was definitely a team effort. All the credit goes to the Bay Waveland Yacht Club as a whole." The great weather this weekend made for good sailing and tough competition. Two points separated the top six teams going into the fourth and final race. In the end, the winner of the final race would determine the Lipton Cup winner."
America's Cup boat's capsizing sparks questions, fears - San Jose Mercury News: ""Everyone wants the fastest boat," said Richard Spindler, founder and publisher of Latitude 38, a sailing magazine based in Mill Valley. "But you can't win the race unless you finish." Now, a month after Oracle Racing's new, custom-made USA 17 cartwheeled into San Francisco Bay, hurled its hotshot crew into the cold waters and crumpled the main sail structure, Ellison's pride is on the line as the sailing syndicate races against the clock to perform repairs and be ready to compete by September's America's Cup finals. After winning the last Cup, Ellison was allowed to dictate the size and basic design of the boats for all the entries in this year's race. But some doubters are wondering whether the towering catamarans are too unwieldy and expensive and should follow the lead of Howard Hughes' giant flying boat, the "Spruce Goose" -- which was shelved for good after one flight. Even America's Cup officials are talking about downsizing the catamaran for future races. But there's no time to turn back for this race. "It's definitely a setback," Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill . . . "
Sail-World.com : 11 year old takes out international sailing crown in Miami: "There certainly aren’t many 11 year olds that can call themselves a World Champion. After all the hard work and training at Lake Tinaroo North Queensland, Kristen Wadley has grabbed her first world sailing title at the Miami Yacht Club USA. Kristen took out the O’pen Bic World Cup Championship’s Under 13 Girl’s Division earlier this month. Her father and coach, Roger Wadley said he could not be any prouder of his daughter. 'It was so emotionally draining for me to watch her and see her come over the line first in a few of her races' he said. 'This is such an amazing achievement to be recognised on the world stage'. Kristen was one of three Australians who competed at the world event in a fleet of over one hundred sailors from seventeen countries. She made a lot of new friends that she hopes to see again when she defends her title at next year’s world Championship in Italy. . . . "
