Blown-up, capzised, set on fire: 'World's unluckiest boat' bows out with a bang - CNN.com: ""These are rare situations and when they do happen, people aren't in a position to test every method for dealing with it," Yachting Monthly technical editor, Chris Beeson, told CNN. "For example, if your mast breaks off, the age-old answer was to use bolt croppers to cut away the rigging and prevent more damage. "But we found that hanging over the edge of the boat while it's rocking around like a fairground ride, with both hands on the croppers, wasn't practical. A simple hacksaw, which you could use with one hand, was much more effective.""
Berkeley: Seven people, dog, cat and snake rescued from yacht in San Francisco Bay - San Jose Mercury News: "A Friday yacht excursion for seven people and their pets ended in a U.S. Coast Guard rescue when the craft began to take on water, Berkeley Fire Chief Gil Dong said. All seven aboard the yacht were fine and no medical treatment was required, Dong said. Also OK were a dog, cat and snake that also were out for the ride. The yacht was just outside the Berkeley Pier when it began taking on water about 12:30 p.m. Friday. Officials don't know what caused the incident. . . . "
Luxury yacht undergoing work in Belfast saved British soldiers in Dunkirk evacuation — Midcoast — Bangor Daily News — BDN Maine:" . . . Atlantide was designed by the English naval architect Alfred Mylne and built in 1930 by the Philip and Sons company in Dartmouth, England, for Sir William Burton. Burton, according to a prospectus developed for the recent sale of the boat, was “a distinguished yachtsman who was helmsman of Shamrock IV, the J Class challenger for the 1930 America’s Cup.” Atlantide, according to the prospectus, followed the yachts in the race, “providing accommodation for the owner and his guests at each regatta.” In 1939, the boat was pressed into service by the British Royal Navy, and the following year joined a fleet of private and navy boats of all sizes and kinds that crossed the English Channel to rescue British and French troops from Dunkirk. The boat was “an active participant,” according to the sale prospectus, “setting out for Dunkirk on May 31,” and operating “under intense enemy shell fire and dive bomber attacks over seven days during which time she assisted various vessels and embarked 35 troops from a disabled landing craft that she then took in tow.” Today, it’s difficult to imagine tired, frightened troops hunkering down below decks on the boat as shells exploded nearby. A major retrofit was undertaken in 1999 by then-owner Tom Perkins. Perkins is well-known in yachting circles as owner of the Maltese Falcon, a $130 million boat he conceived and had built as his dream boat. Atlantide was listed for sale by Perkins at 5 million euros earlier this year. . . ."
