America's Cup amphitheater sails through - SFGate: "Normally, something as big and loud as a rock concert amphitheater would take months of public back and forth to win approval. That's why it's all the more amazing that the America's Cup and Live Nation landed permission for a 9,000-seat venue on San Francisco's waterfront without a single commission vote or hearing. "It's like it just fell out of the sky," said Jon Golinger, head of the Telegraph Hill Dwellers Association, whose members will be serenaded by as many as 40 outdoor shows this spring and summer. It didn't quite fall out of the sky, but it's close. America's Cup organizers originally had permission to build a 4,000-seat amphitheater on Piers 27-29 for opening and closing ceremonies and other events connected to this year's sailboat-racing competition."

America's Cup expedites overdue projects - SFGate: "The great thing about events like the America's Cup is that even if they flop, the long-term payoff for the host city can be rewarding. I refer not to the balance sheet at San Francisco's City Hall, but to civic improvements that in this case might not otherwise occur. These projects include a new cruise terminal and a more pedestrian-friendly Fisherman's Wharf. While they've been on the city's to-do list for ages, they became priorities in response to the hype surrounding a regatta that could draw hundreds of thousands of viewers for the final batch of high-profile yacht races on the bay. We'll see what happens now that only four yachts will compete in the series being held from July to September. Mayor Ed Lee's administration is scrambling to help raise $32 million so taxpayers won't be stuck with the tab for city services related to the event. But three infrastructure projects already are leaving their mark in ways that are long overdue. The cruise terminal is the most visible change, a long box of aluminum and glass that for now sits behind fences along the south edge of Pier 27. . . ."

Town boards recently approved $65,000 in funding to rebuild the structure, but this time it will be set on a foundation. Maserati Soldini breaks NY to SF Speed Record (video)

Maserati Soldini: arrivo a San Francisco

Sailboat Crew Breaks Speed Record in NY-to-SF Voyage | Playbook | Wired.com: "Famed Italian skipper Giovanni Soldini and his tireless crew of eight sailors obliterated the record for sailing the “Golden Route” from New York to San Francisco, shaving a full 10 days off the previous record around the tip of South America. . . . Forecasting technology also advanced alongside the boats in the days since Parlier set the record, providing Soldini’s crew with far more accurate data than Parlier had available. The crew relied upon laptops and a satellite antenna to download the latest weather data and images. . . The original plan had Soldini doing the Volvo Ocean Race, but it’s a much bigger undertaking, so he decided to challenge the Golden Route record. The historic route was heavily used by clippers during the gold rush of the mid and late 1800s. It is a difficult journey that takes sailors through a variety of weather conditions, including the Doldrums and the westerly gales at Cape Horn. Flying Cloud set the record at 89 days and 8 hours in 1854, a record that stood for more than 130 years until Warren Luhrs and Thursday’s Child made the journey in 80 days and 20 hours in 1989. “It’s not really the record we’re beating but the record we’re setting that counts,” said Breymaier. “It will be difficult to break later on. We’re racing whoever is coming after.”. . . ."

2013 RORC Caribbean 600 Start Helicopter Footage

Photographer Richard Langdon shot the start of the 2013 RORC Caribbean 600 Race from a helicopter

2013 RORC Caribbean 600 tracking

RORC Caribbean 600 Race Homepage: "Breaking news from the RORC Caribbean 600 race course is that the first finishers are expected in the early hours of tomorrow morning (Wednesday 20 Feb), with every possibility that at least one record will be broken and possibly two. Peter Aschenbrenner's American trimaran, Paradox, has virtually rounded Guadeloupe and is close to laying Les Desirades, the most easterly point of the course. Paradox, with multihull legend Cam Lewis on board, is still on record pace and is expected to arrive back in Antigua in the early hours of tomorrow morning. Paradox need to cross the line before 03:11:05 on Wednesday morning, to beat Region Guadeloupe's 2009 record. Paradox needs to cover 190 miles in 12 hours, which is very achievable. In the Multihull Class Lloyd Thornburg's Gunboat 66, Phaedo, took a big gamble this morning and rolled straight sixes. Leaving Montserrat to leeward meant that the team had to sail many more miles but the "Buffalo Girls" manoeuvre had Phaedo smelling of roses, nearly catching up with ICAP Leopard and cementing their position as leaders of the Multihull Class."

Hansen said a keen interest from his father has turned into an Olympic dream. "He'd [Hansen's father] done a bit of sailing and he took me to the local sailing club, [which was] the Parua Bay Cruising Club," explained Hansen. "It all just went from there. I learnt to sail and all of a sudden was going to Taipa, and then was going to Auckland every weekend." Maserati Yacht sets New York to San Francisco record (video)

Maserati smashes the NY to SF Record with a time of 47 days 0 hours 42 minutes and 29 seconds! Interview with skipper Giovanni Soldini just after Maserati hit the dock in SF. Soldini also announces that Maserati will join the Transpac Race to Hawaii!

Yacht sets record from New York to San Francisco: "A racing yacht named after one of the world's fastest cars has docked in San Francisco after what organizers said was the fastest passage of a single-hulled sailing vessel from New York to San Francisco. The 70-foot Maserati sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge late Saturday morning and tied up at Pier 39 Marina around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, 47 days after pulling out of New York City, said Judy Laws, a spokeswoman for the event. The 13,225-mile journey around Cape Horn at the tip of South America is what sailors have said for centuries is one of the most challenging sailing journeys in the world. The Maserati finished the trip in 47 days, two hours and 33 minutes, easily beating the most recent record of 57 days, three hours and two minutes set in 1998, Laws said. . . . The eight-member crew of the Maserati — led by its Italian skipper 47-year-old Giovanni Soldini — left New York City on New Year's Eve. . . ."

Racing yacht sets record for fastest passage from New York to San Francisco - ESPN: "Though calm winds late Friday had pushed back the vessel's expected arrival by a few hours, Laws described a festive atmosphere as dignitaries, including Mauro Battocchi, Consul General of Italy in San Francisco, and others greeted the crew when they arrived at the dock."
