Rolex Farr 40 World Championship 2017, July 13-16

UPDATE July 16, 2017 Plenty wins the 20th Rolex Farr 40 World Championship in Costa Smeralda | Yacht Club Costa Smeralda: Porto Cervo, July 16, 2017. Plenty, owned by Alex Roepers with tactician Terry Hutchinson, the defending champions at the start of the event, are World Champions for the third time in the Farr 40 One Design Class.
Update July 15: Rolex Farr 40 Worlds: Plenty lengthens her lead | News - Yacht Club Costa Smeralda: Alex Roepers, owner/helmsman aboard Plenty: "It was a phenomenal day considering the consistent performance by the team Plenty. We chipped away four races in a row placing 2, 1, 2, 1 so I'm very happy with our consistency. The conditions were pretty good, not too light. We saw wind speeds as low as 6 knots and up to 12/13 but usually it was around 8 to 11 knots. Great job done by Terry Hutchinson and the whole crew. Tomorrow [Sunday] is another day, we'll go out expecting a normal day and see how it goes."
UPDATE July 14 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship: Plenty emerges from the Mistral - News - Yacht Club Costa Smeralda: "The Race Committee kept a close eye on the situation in the hopes of getting a race in. Finally at 5:00 PM, in the warm light of the late afternoon, the Farr 40 fleet headed out of port. The winds were at about 23 knots but built during the race making the competition a real thrill both for the teams participating and for the spectators watching the Farr 40s planing downwind at up to 20 knots ... Plenty took the lead [and won] followed by Enfant Terrible and Pazza Idea, the top-placed Corinthian team ... Racing should get underway tomorrow, Saturday June 15th, at 11:00 AM in light northerly breezes. The Race Committee will try to run up to four races a day in the final two days of racing to make up for the races abandoned due to conditions."

Rolex Farr 40 World Championship 2017 Preview

Video above published Jun 15, 2017: From 13 to 16 July, the world of yachting will return to Porto Cervo, Sardinia for the pinnacle of one-design racing: the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. With the boat owners at the helm, top yachtsmen and –women, both amateur and professional, will compete on identical 40-foot (12-metre) yachts for the World Championship trophy and a Rolex timepiece. Teamwork and consistency are essential ingredients to win the regatta. The 2017 edition is particularly special, celebrating both the 20th anniversary of the Farr 40 Worlds and the 50th anniversary of the prestigious host, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

UPDATE: Gusts at over 30 knots forced the Race Committee to abandon racing for July 13th, and tomorrow's forecast is also very windy. Stay tuned!

America's Cup Parade In Auckland, New Zealand (video)

America's Cup Parade Auckland

Video above published July 6, 2017: It's fair to say the America's Cup welcome home parade in Auckland was a pretty special day for everyone at Emirates Team New Zealand. The parade in central Auckland on Thursday, July 6th, celebrated the team and their incredible victory and to welcome the return of the America’s Cup to New Zealand for the first time since it left in 2003.

We won the America's Cup!

Video above published on Jun 26, 2017: "We did it. The America's Cup is coming home for New Zealand."

When Emirates Team New Zealand sped through the finish line to win the 35th America's Cup in Bermuda, Emirates Team New Zealand and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) became the next defender and trustee of the Auld Mug. And the moment the New Zealand boat crossed the line to win the America’s Cup, the RNZYS accepted a challenge from Luna Rossa’s Circolo della Vela Sicillia (CVS) for the 36th America’s Cup. Representatives from the two teams and clubs will decide on the rules for the next America’s Cup. It is expected that the Protocol will be released in a few weeks, defining (among other things):
  • Structure of the organizing body of the event (commercially and sportively)
  • Venue(s)
  • Dates of the event
  • Class of boat(s) to be used (with Class Rule to follow)
  • Regatta format, including preliminary or World Series type events (if any)
  • Entry process and associated fees
  • Nationality restrictions
  • Media/commercial rights restrictions / split between event organizer and teams
  • Profit sharing between event organizer and teams
Once the rules are defined and published, clubs and their teams will have the information needed to decide whether to take up the challenge for the 36th America's Cup.
